Utility
dog for work

This is one of the oldest breeds of pointing dogs, bred to find and point out game birds in the field (hence their name: to point).
The pointer's task was to quickly search the field against the wind, sweeping across it and finding, for example, a partridge or a pheasant. When the dog smelled the birds, it froze in a characteristic pose called a standing position. He remained motionless until the hunter approached him and gave the command to scare away the game.
After picking up the bird, the hunter shot and... sent the second dog - the retriever - to get the shot. This was the case in the past, when only the nobility hunted and could keep entire packs of dogs for this purpose - each dog had a task in which it specialized (there were poineters, skitters, retrievers, hounds, water dogs, etc.).
Today, hunting has moved "slightly" away from these noble principles, and the average hunter is looking for a universal dog.
So can the Pointer be called a multi-sided dog? Certainly yes, with proper training and in the right hands ;). The Pointer - contrary to popular belief - does not have to be only a dry field dog (although this is undoubtedly its specialty and whoever sees a pointer working in the field will be convinced that there is no more beautiful sight!), but it can definitely also be prepared to work after the shot. or in the water.
It is an extremely intelligent and easy to train dog, but it has its own dignity - it cannot be forced to do anything. A wise manager who knows how to motivate the dog and exercises it properly will easily prepare it for hunting or multi-faceted or even all-around competitions (in the Czech Republic you can meet pointers at such competitions!).
Someone once said that the pointer requires guidance with an iron hand, but wearing a silk glove - we completely agree with that!
Training a hunting dog - regardless of the breed - requires time and patience, but its subsequent help during the hunt is invaluable.

Of course, the pointer's usefulness is not limited to hunting abilities.
These medium-sized dogs with athletic bodies are suitable for virtually any dog sport. Do you want to try your hand at agility or frisbee? Or maybe you are a fan of dogtrekking/skijouring? That's great - the pointer will be happy to accompany you in every activity! They are eager to learn, easy to motivate to work and they are quick :)
